Procter & Gamble Co. plans to roll out a brand called DS3, which is to include a line of eight liquid-free cleaning products for personal care and the home. The Cincinnati-based maker of consumer goods (NYSE: PG) said the compact size of DS3 products to clean the face, body and hair makes them travel friendly.

DS3 products are made with what P&G called breakthrough, proprietary technology that eliminates water from the final product, removing 80 percent of weight while reducing 70 percent of space required.

Reduced size and weight also should make it easier and cheaper for P&G to ship DS3 to retailers or consumers, and the company noted that DS3 could significantly reduce impact on the environment. P&G’s tag line is «DS3: Enlightened clean.»

One liquid-free swatch works just as well as heavy, water-based cleaning products, P&G stated. DS3 performs best when used one year after purchase.

P&G didn’t disclose pricing. A limited batch of prototype DS3 products was available on the Indiegogo e-commerce site with estimated delivery last month, and each sold out.

Full market launch is expected in late 2019.

In addition to facial cleanser, body wash, hand soap, shampoo and conditioner, the DS3 line includes laundry detergent, surface cleaner and toilet cleaner. Each is made with different ingredients.

To activate the products, consumers remove a so-called swatch from packaging and add water. For example, the hand soap swatch will begin to dissolve and transform into foam when water is added.

For grooming products, P&G advises dissolving the swatch in your hands with water and then applying the lather to wet skin or hair.

To clean a toilet, drop the swatch in the bowl, close the lid, go to sleep and flush in the morning.

For laundry, place the swatch in the bottom of the drum before loading clothes.

To clean surfaces, drop a swatch into a spray bottle and fill with water, which should provide enough to last for weeks.

The swatches come in various sizes, with hand soap the smallest and toilet cleaner the largest. Each is labeled with a word such as “hand” or “body” and includes an image such as five fingers or a toilet seat.

The personal care products are packaged in one container with 30 swatches. Fabric and home care products come in packages with various counts.

DS3 comes in two scents. Blue Wave smells of apple, cedar, bluebells, white rose and bamboo. Blue Mist smells of pineapple, citrus, mint, pepper and sandalwood.

All DS3 products contain fewer chemicals than those typically used to clean a home or wash a body, and no unnecessary ingredients are used, P&G stated.

For example, the DS3 products contain no chlorine-based bleaches or phosphates. Packaging is recyclable and biodegradable.

However, P&G advised that children shouldn’t handle DS3 swatches, even if supervised.

P&G spent 10 years developing and testing DS3 technology. The 12-person DS3 team included engineers, designers, product developers and manufacturing experts.
